Crate.io has raised $11 million in Series A funding to push development of its vision for an open source SQL database for real-time machine data and IoT applications.
The funding round was led by Zetta Venture Partners and Deutsche Invest Equity with participation from Mike Chalfen, Momenta Partners and Charlie Songhurst. According to the company, existing investors Draper Esprit, Vito Ventures and Solomon Hykes also participated in the round, which will be used to boost the growth and adoption of both the commercial and open source offerings.
The Crate Machine Data Platform plays a crucial role in helping firms put machine data to work faster. The company’s aim is to make the job of building the data management “plumbing” that forms the foundation for IoT systems easier with the help of this platform.
Jodok Schaeffler, general manager of ALPLA said: “We are running visual inspection systems in about every line of our plants. Having people constantly monitor these systems on the factory floor and react to any error is almost impossible. By using the Crate Machine Data Platform to collect and analyse sensor data from all our factory equipment in real time, we can actually direct people on the floor to the ‘hot spots’ and, with that, improve the waste rate and efficiency of production.”
Functionality of the Crate Machine Data Platform includes high velocity data loading, real-time data analysis, data enrichment, data visualisation, operational triggers and alerting and data platform administration.
CrateDB is an open source SQL database for real-time processing of IoT and machine data. The newly introduced CrateDB 3.0 includes a number of enhancements like Shard Visualizer that makes database administration easier.
Earlier this month, SensorUp secured $2 million in a seed funding round led by Vanedge Capital. The funds will be used to push the go-to-market campaign of the firm’s SensorThings Cloud service. According to Paul Lee, managing partner of Vanedge Capital, SensorUp will become the IoT analytics platform of choice for customers who rely on geospatial in their IoT implementations.
