Since the first official 5G spec was made official last year, this has led to multiple companies across multiple industries to jump on board to upgrade their products and services to it. Wireless carriers have started performing outdoor field tests of the new technology, but for that to happen these companies need a modem. This field has seen a lot of activity here with OEMs promising new smartphones that support the new technology. For this to happen though, we need 5G modems that can actually integrate into consumer products and Samsung has just confirmed their first one will be the Exynos Modem 5100.
Samsung isn’t the only company in the business of creating 5G modems for consumer and commercial products though. Intel announced the XMM 8060 late last year and Qualcomm has confirmed the X50 modem will be available in their Snapdragon chipsets. Samsung’s Exynos SoC is used in smartphones sold all across the world and earlier this year they promised to unveil a prototype 5G modem during the second half of this year. This brings us to today’s announcement of the Exynos Modem 5100, which Samsung says is a single-chip modem that supports multi-mode communication.
The company is calling the Exynos Modem 5100 the “industry’s first 5G modem that is fully compatible with 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 15 (Rel.15).” This translates to the modem supporting the most up-to-date standard specification for 5G New Radio (5G-NR). The modem is to be built using the company’s power-efficient 10-nanometer (nm) process technology and it will also support legacy radio access technologies as well. The modem is said to be able to deliver a maximum downlink speed of up to 2Gbps in its 5G sub-6GHz settings and up to 6Gbps when it is using its mmWave settings.
An official release date of the Exynos Modem 5100 hasn’t been announced just yet, but Samsung did promise that it will be available to customers by the end of 2018.
