If you own a Xiaomi device that is either well past its prime or you just plain don’t like MIUI, then you may be running one of the many custom ROMs available on our forums. The most popular custom ROM for Xiaomi devices is LineageOS, but last month the official builds were taken offline. Now, over a month later, the builds are being restored for most of the affected devices.
For those of you who were out of the loop, what happened is that SenseTime, a Chinese company that specializes in facial recognition software, filed a DMCA takedown notice against a repository containing useful vendor BLOBs. LineageOS does not make use of SenseTime’s BLOBs in its Xiaomi builds, but SenseTime felt the presence of the BLOB in this repository was infringing its rights. The branch containing Xiaomi device BLOBs was taken offline while the LineageOS team looked for an alternative, and now the team is ready to build the custom ROM for Xiaomi devices once again.
On August 9th, the team removed builds for the following Xiaomi devices:
- Xiaomi POCO F1
- Xiaomi Mi 5
- Xiaomi Mi 5S
- Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus
- Xiaomi Mi 6
- Xiaomi Mi 8
- Xiaomi Mi A1
- Xiaomi Mi Mix
- Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
- Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S
- Xiaomi Mi Note 2
- Xiaomi Mi Note 3
- Xiaomi Redmi 3S/3X
- Xiaomi Redmi 4/4X
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 4
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro
Builds are coming back for all but the Redmi Note 7 Pro on LineageOS 16 and the Redmi 3S/3X, Redmi Note 4, and Redmi 4/4X on LineageOS 15.1. Visit the official LineageOS website and the XDA forums for the latest update on the status of your specific device’s build.
Update: LineageOS 16 builds online for the Xiaomi Redmi 3S, Redmi 3X, Redmi 4 and Redmi 4X
Official LineageOS nightlies are back for the Xiaomi Redmi 3S, Redmi 3X, Redmi 4 and Redmi 4X. As a bonus, the devices have been bumped up to LineageOS 16.
