The Google Camera mod is probably one of the best feats of custom development in Android in recent years. On a lot of phones, it doesn’t even require root, yet it allows you to have the Google Pixel‘s camera processing on your smartphone, complete with some of Google’s best features, like Night Sight. There are a few downsides, but none that would really be considered deal breakers. One such downside is that, because the Google Pixel smartphones don’t have a second sensor, it makes sense that the Google Camera port can’t make use of a second camera lens on supported smartphones like the Razer Phone 2 or the Motorola Moto X4. Thanks to the hard work of Ukrainian developer B-S-G and another developer by the name of Alexander Deev, that’s set to change.
What Alexander Deev discovered led to B-S-G being able to enable that second sensor, and that was a system property called “vendor.camera.aux.packagelist.” That property contains a list of app package names that are whitelisted by the system to make use of the secondary rear camera, and the Qualcomm Snap Camera is on that list. B-S-G renamed his camera app’s package name to be “org.codeaurora.snapcam” so that it would be whitelisted. He then modified the Google Camera app to allow users to switch between the rear camera, the telephoto lens, and the front camera. I tested this on my Razer Phone 2, and you can see how it works below.
The telephoto lens doesn’t have a lot of use for many people, but it shows that, at the very least, the Google Camera port can be improved even further despite already being an amazing achievement. In particular with the Razer Phone 2, the Google Camera mod turns the camera from average to an actually decent shooter. When you first download and install the app, you’ll need to enable the “Add AUX to camera switch” option which is under the B-S-G Mod settings. You can see what that’s like below.
Once you enable that, restart the app and try switching between the front and back camera! If you want to keep up with all of the latest developments with the Google Camera application, be sure to check out our forums below.
