Samsung Galaxy S8 & Galaxy S8+ Android Oreo Update Rolls Out Without Project Treble Support

Samsung doesn’t roll out major Android updates right away. It takes a staged approach, launching beta programs with multiple builds ahead of a final, stable version. The company announced the Samsung Experience 9.0 Beta program back in November 2017, and after a months-long beta period, an official Oreo build has begun rolling out to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

The Oreo update’s availability is dependent on location, and users in Germany are getting it first. The firmware, which has the build number G955XXU1CRAP and it is just shy of 500MB in size, has Samsung Experience 9.0, Android Oreo features like picture-in-picture mode and Notification Dots, and Android’s February security patches. Assuming all goes according to plan, the rollout should expand to more countries in the coming weeks.

Thanks to the Oreo beta for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, we were able to show off new features such as the multitasking menu’s compact lists view, Samsung’s overhauled keyboard, new Edge Lighting effects for notifications, and more. Now that the official Android 8.0 Oreo OTA update is rolling out to users, more people will get to try them out.

Samsung’s beta programs, which allow the community to test upcoming software releases, are a win-win for the company. Its developers get invaluable feedback on performance, bugs, and features, and users who want to test out new and unreleased versions of Android get a sneak peak at what Samsung’s engineers have been up to.

One thing that didn’t make its way into the beta was Project Treble, and unfortunately, the stable Oreo update doesn’t have it either. Folks who’ve received the update and dug through the system report that Android 8.0 Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ doesn’t meed the modular update framework’s prerequisites.

Beta program participants will be among the first to receive the over-the-air update, Samsung says. If you’re in the beta, keep your eyes peeled for it.
